* BROMELAIN

Pineapple was once a symbol of hospitality and social status in early America. Today it is sometimes served at the end of a meal in a Chinese restaurant or found in an upside down cake. BROMELAIN is a group of related enzymes that are found in the juice and stems of pineapple. Sometimes used as a meat tenderizer, sometimes used as a digestive aid.

BROMELAIN has a much more interesting story as a phytochemical.

Recently a web-organization greenmedinfo.com posted a report about BROMELAIN Dec 24,2011. In which they summarized a 2007 medical study that declared that the “antitumoral effect of BROMELAIN was superior to that of 5-FU (aka 5-fluorouracil), whose survival index was approximately 263% , relative to the untreated control”. This could easily in my mind mean anything and frankly says little about the effectiveness of BROMELAIN. It does say that BROMELAIN therapy, if one could call it that, is much more survivable than a highly poisonous chemo drug that kills half of patients given 7.8grams (based on a 150 lb person). 5-FU has been used for close to 40yrs, isnt it time we moved forward in the fight against cancer, come on, just a little bit?

My initial research notes appear below, more detailed discussion of the studies supporting BROMELAIN will appear at a later date.

-BROMELAIN IS FOUND IN THE HIGHEST CONCENTRATIONS IN THE CORE AND STEM OF A PINEAPPLE. (just a few days ago my wife got a “fruit bouquet”. I ate the pineapple on it but threw away the core, never ever again!)
-a 95% mixture of proteases
-some BROMELAIN is absorbed intact. thus has effects outside of digestion
-believed and used in Europe/Germany as an anti-inflammatory for nasal conditions and arthritis
-one of the most popular supplements in Germany
-may reduce swelling and bruising after an injury
-anti-thrombotic, fibrinolytic
-is being studied for its effects in debriding burns
-the enzymatic deshielding effects of BROMELAIN help prevent metastasis
-the BROMELAIN used for ‘deshielding’ must be crude and undiluted (a GDU rating of 2,000 is best) per “Herbal Medicine Healing and Cancer” 1999.
-enhances absorption and usability of both QUERCETIN and the CURCUMOIDS found in TURMERIC.
-inhibits production of a mucus substance that protects the surface of the cancer cell from identification and docking by the lymph cells.
-inactivates prostaglandin E2 and thromboxanes. Prostaglandin E2 inhibits tumor killing function of macrophages while thromboxanes lead to platelet aggregation and favor the development of castaway tumor cells.
-studies have confirmed that BROMELAIN affects multiple cellular and molecular targets
-studies have confirmed that BROMELAIN has the capacity to modulate key pathways that support malignancy
-has direct impact on cancer cells and their immediate micro-environment
-inhibits nuclear factor kappa-B ….causes apoptosis in skin cancer
-induces autophagy in mammary carcinoma cells
-inhibits COX-2
-inhibits invasive properties of glioma cells
-may help with reducing the inflammation and neoplasia of inflammatory bowel disease

Pineapple juice is one of my favorites. I like it a lot, my wife doesn’t, nor will she eat pineapple either. Thank God for supplements.
Every step of this research surprised me. So many foods and phytonutrients and yet we manage to walk into a grocery store and avoid most of them. It is so EASY, TO CHANGE YOUR DIET AND TO LIVE BETTER. Especially once you know more about what you are eating and what your choices are. You cant judge a book by its cover alone, nor can you judge a food by its “cover” (whether a box or package or appearance) alone either. Small changes, easy changes, eating the core from a slice of pineapple, may help you avoid or survive the experience of cancer. Smart choices are indeed CHOICES, choose …smartly.

Next time you sit down with a good book to read, do some “good” eating/snacking too.

@ PARSLEY

-Contains Polyacetylenes which seem to protect against certain cancer causing substances in tobacco smoke.
-may also help regulate the body’s production of prostaglandins which are a powerful tumor promoter.
-contains FLAVONOIDS and MONOTERPENES which have been shown to slow the development of some cancers.
-rich in POTASSIUM.
-closely related to celery.
-contains: LUTEOLIN, LUTEIN, APIGENIN, CHRYSOERIOL, KAEMPFEROL, QUERCETIN, ISORHAMNETIN, GENISTEIN, MYRISTICIN, ZEAXANTHIN and APIOL.
-the volatile oils in parsley have been found to inhibit tumor formation in animal studies
-a Dutch study indicates that it may prevent leukemia cell development. Primary active ingredient in this effect: APIGENIN
-other studies show APIGENIN is an important foe in ovarian cancer.
-1/4 cup provides more than 300% of the daily value for vitamin K
-is considered a “top source” for APIGENIN which in addition to protecting the prostate may also help support breast colon skin and thyroid health.

(more detailed information on some studies performed on APIGENIN and parsley to come later)
